"BENEATH THE SURFACE" challenges conventional notions of sexuality and delves deep into the sacred relationship between humans and snakes, inviting viewers to question long-held beliefs and rediscover the captivating allure of these extraordinary creatures.
For millennia, snakes have held a revered place in human culture and symbolism. They were once honored as symbols of life, presentness, and eternity, representing wisdom and high knowledge in various ancient civilizations. Yet, as history unfolded, repressive belief systems emerged, casting a shadow over the snake's image and associating it with evil. The character of the devil was developed from the 4th century onwards, and the word "snake" and the creature itself began to bear the weight of an unfavorable reputation.
